In order to achieve transcriptional balance, one X chromosome is inactivated (Xi) in every female cell. An X linked inactivation centre (Xic) at Xq13.2 is responsible for the initiation of inactivation but the exact size of the Xic is unclear although it includes the XIST gene (X-inactivation Locus). XX females with a missing XIST gene have been phenotypically associated with syndromes such as Turner Syndrome.
