The HER2 human epidermal growth factor receptor gene (ERBB2 or NEU), located at 17q11-12 is a member of the EGF (epidermal growth factor) receptor family1. It is activated and amplified in 20-30% of breast cancers2 and it has been correlated with a poor prognosis for the patient. Monoclonal antibody treatment of amplification patients using Herceptin (Trastuzumab) is effective, increasing the survival time by specifically targeting cells that overexpress the HER2 protein3 and cleaning them from the system. Similar results have been obtained for a variety of other malignant neoplasms overexpressing HER2 in cancers e.g. ovary4, stomach5, salivary gland6 and in small cell lung cancer7.
